Dressage for the Everyday Rider
Where the Art of Horsemanship meets Classical
Dressage! Pleasure Dressage is for the everyday
rider who wants to improve their level of riding
while deepening the connection, and relationship,
they share with their horse. It welcomes all
breeds, ages and levels of riding and is both
stress and resistance free. This style encourages
riders to strive for ease, simplicity and joy
in their horsemanship, not perfection.
Pleasure Dressage focuses on feel and timing
while employing technique with the softest
of hearts, the lightest of hands and deepest
of seats. This style of dressage not only
crosses over and merges the worlds of Classical
Dressage with the Art of Horsemanship it creates
a style of riding where ease, unity and partnership
become the guiding principles to a lifetime
of working together.
Pleasure Dressage focuses on the following foundational
training principles:
- The quality of a horse’s
training - considering the horses emotional
and physical well-being
at all times
- Creating the building blocks
necessary for emotional and physical fitness
and control (agility)
- Understanding the time needed
to build a solid foundation - Take
the time it takes, so it takes less time
- Stress and resistance free
training - never compromising the horse (through
force or unnecessary pressure) to achieve
a specific goal
- Creating, and maintaining,
relaxation, responsiveness and rhythm throughout
training

What
is Haute Ecole? (pronounced "aut ecole")
A very stylized and advanced form of classical
dressage where the horse uses his hind, and
front, legs completely symmetrical (used in
pairs) when executing collected movements. It
is the most elaborate and specialized form of
dressage, reaching its ultimate development
at the Vienna school in its traditional white
Lippizaner horses. Some characteristic haute
école airs, or movements, are the pirouettes,
which are turns on the haunches at the walk
and the canter, the piaffe, passage, pesade,
levade, terre a terre, walk courbette, courbette,
croupade and capriole.
Teaching your horse Haute Ecole on the ground
first is so necessary to their over all emotional
and physical development. I begin training horses
with my Lunging with a Purpose DVD: Developing
Connection, Collection and Self-carriage Naturally.
This DVD creates the balance, gymnastic elasticity
and hind quarter strength necessary for horses
to carry themselves properly and in true self-carriage.
The form you are asking your horse to carry
in my lunging exercise helps to transfer weight
to the hind-end, thus prepare your horse for
upper level dressage as they are in position
to move effortlessly and powerfully. This work
also develops the emotional bond and mind/body
connection necessary for true joy and partnership
to flourish when riding.
Much of my liberty work, found in the images
provided on this page and in the link below,
are the sum of playing at liberty and working
my horses through my lunging program. When this
level of connection and communication established,
riding becomes more effortless, quiet and as
one.
