This
Month’s Topic of Interest:
“Are You and Your
Horse Mentally and Physically Ready
for Showing and/or Trail Riding?”
Did you know
that preparing your horse for either
a pleasure class or a juried trail class
competition can lead to both a “well-broke”
horse and a safe and relaxing experience
on the trail?
While most of you know I don’t compete
professionally, I’m not sure you know
that I do prepare my horses, with the
same guiding principles, to perform
advanced (and bridle-less) juried pleasure,
trail class and cross-training exercises.
Why do I do this? For one reason, I
am always in search of deepening the
trust and partnership I share with my
horses and I know (through experience)
that if you have your horse mentally
and physically connected, you will have
yourself a trusting, safe and willing
partner – any where and any time.
I’m going to list below a few cross-training
fundamentals that will outline what
a well broke, or performance horse,
should know and be able to do:
-
Work on and off the rail (inside of
arena)
-
Work
through a timed trail class (obstacle
challenge) that ranks horsemanship
skills above all (partnership and
problem-solving that does not compromise
the horse’s dignity)
-
Perform
reining classes, which includes, but
is not limited to: minimal use of
aids (rein and leg), smooth gaits
and transitions, clear and smooth
pattern work, turns on forehand and
haunches, clean stops and maneuvers,
no balking and clear concentration
from both

Another
exciting and powerful experience for Rider
Horsemanship at Harrisburg’s 2009 World
Horse Expo!
Thanks to ALL for
another exhilarating, meaningful and successful
4 days! We enjoyed the many beautiful
stories everyone shared about their personal
relationships with their horses and the
inspiration they felt watching Caroline
interact with her horses. Read what PA’s
World Horse Expo participants had to say
about Caroline’s clinician presentations
& liberty and freestyle demonstrations:
"I've read Linda
Kohanov's books, and studied Pat Parelli's
methods. I could see Mrs. Rider's experience
with P. Parelli, when she gave a demo
at the Horse World Expo, but she greatly
expanded Parelli's and Kohanov's ideas,
and brought about an essence all her own.
The relationship she has with her horses
is breathtaking.
Thank you, Mary
"Dear Ms. Rider,
My name is Meghann. I'm 14 years old.
I went to the PA Horse Expo on Saturday,
February 28th. I saw your freestyle and
your demonstration about making your horse
more supple. The freestyle was amazing,
and it gave me goose bumps. It was obvious
that Legend and Smokey really wanted to
be with you and wanted to do what you
asked. I'd love to be able to have that
with my horse. So, until I heard about
your program I had no idea how to begin.
I really love your way of thinking and
the way you give horses a choice. So,
I bought the first DVD and I watched it
as soon as I got home."
Sincerely, Your Fan, Meghann
