Private Lesson Clinic
Expand Your Relationship & Horsemanship
Skills
A private lesson clinic is such a nice
way to brush-up your horse communication
and training skills after a long and
cold winter! Not only will it further
your learning to watch other people’s
lessons with their horses, but your
connection and understanding will deepen
in your daily, one-on-one lesson, while
focusing on the specific needs and interests
of you and your horse. It’s a great
way to “get back into the saddle again,”
and take things to a new level, while
enjoying the camaraderie of other like-minded
folks. This type of immersion is a
great opportunity to deepen the partnership
you already have with your horse, and
help activate and actualize new possibilities.
There is also space to audit, should
you like to watch and not bring your
horse. You can also lease one of our
lesson horses for the clinic if you
would like to learn from a horse that
is already schooled in this method,
or if you do not have a horse of your
own at this time.

This
Month’s Topic of Interest:
“Emotional
Agility: Where Energy, Connection and
Communication Converge””
Would you
like to learn how to become more emotionally,
mentally and physically agile, not only
when working with your horse but in
every relationship and life circumstance?
I have heard the term "emotional agility"
used to describe those who can easily,
freely and consciously move their emotions
from one end of the spectrum to the
other. In the horse, this is what I
refer to as “emotional adaptability”…aka,
referred to as emotional intelligence
within some of the leading horse/human
coaching industry.
Horses are programmed to shift emotionally,
within any one moment, thus quickly
and advantageously adapting to their
environment. This is predisposed, hardwired
as a prey animal, and why they are such
fierce survivors. In the human world,
it is denoted as a characteristic of
leaders who handle themselves well in
difficult situations, as well as a much
desired skill of an excellent communicator.
The horse is a consummate observer and
emotional expert, who can easily discern
emotional traits within us. See, horses
“feel” what they see. They pay more
attention to “energy” coming from another
being than minute facial or verbal expressions.
Have you ever watched National Geographic
and seen how a lion can walk amidst
a herd of Zebra, or Antelope, without
causing them to run? If you’ve watched
closely, you see that the lion’s body
language, energy he is projecting, is
relaxed. Very different from a lion
that is on the kill and in position
to stalk and take down its prey. The
energy that he is sending is either
relaxed or poised, ready for position.
And, that is very similar to how we
humans interact with horses. Our bodies
radiate all types of energy, messages.
Unfortunately, over time, we’ve become
desensitized to body language, fogetting
that only ten percent of how we communicate
is verbal…that’s right, the other 90%
is non-verbal. As author Linda Kohanov
(Tao of Equus author and international
speaker) puts it, we’ve learned to “dissociate”
from our bodies.
Once we understand the depth and power
of our thoughts, and how they radiate
within our bodies, we can become more
aware of how we can project that thought,
creating energy within that communicates
clearly to our equine friends. This
modality, being aware of feelings and
congruent between mind and body, is
a highly specialized method of perception
among horses. Because horses are empathetic
– feeling of and for others, they know
the mental and emotional state of their
handlers, their riders. Their empathetic
perception encompasses human beings
because horses share a common language
with us – a language that was with
us since the beginning of time, a wordless,
universal body language felt within
our gut.
So, here we are with the horse….wanting
to communicate clearly and with emotional
balance. How do we do this? We learn
by creating new paradigms and shifts
in both our minds and bodies. We learn
about being congruent and about embodiment.
Basically, what our mind thinks has
been proven to show up in our bodies,
whether it is manifested as an inner
strength or a weakness. Once we are
aware of “where” we are emotionally,
we can begin to channel, project our
heart’s intention, thus creating levels
of energy. When our mind and body acts
as one, we are congruent, creating and
projecting calm, free flowing levels
of energy that is both in harmony and
in synchrony. It is this synergy that
communicates volumes because to the
horse, movement together is more unified
and powerful than individual movement.
Very similar principle as a sports team
that becomes a “winning team.” They
are unified in synchronized thought,
emotion and movement. One current stream
of energy flows from one team player
to the next, creating a heightened sense
of euphoria and much joy.
If you would like to learn more about
this, Rider Horsemanship can teach you
with our Tao of Horsemanship Approach
to Being and working with horses, beginning
with out Round Penning DVD’s.
